Chapter

Sixteen

I slid out of bed and got dressed. Onyx stretched and yawned, then followed me downstairs. Once I’d grabbed my sword, I summoned Tulip. I told her we were hunting some werewolves, maybe a witch or two, and possibly even a vampire. She agreed to help.

We went outside, opened the garage, and got into the Chevelle. I plugged Tucker’s location into the maps app. It was a warehouse building on the outskirts of the city. The quickest way to his position would take me right by the front of it, though, which might alert those inside. So I rerouted it to approach from the rear instead. That would take me to Tucker without coming too close to the warehouse.

A few minutes later, we reached the area, and I killed the lights when I spotted the Explorer. By the time I’d parked and killed the engine, I had a text from Tucker. He was over by the building.

“Thanks for coming so quickly,” he said as I reached him with Onyx and Tulip. The building looked abandoned. “The two wolves parked in the front lot and went inside. There’s a Mercedes there, too, so I have a feeling they must be meeting their superiors here.”

“I’ll send Tulip in to get a look around,” I told him. “At least we’ll know the lay of the land before we go in.”

Tucker nodded, and I explained the situation to Tulip. She told me she understood and disappeared with a pop.

“You’re lucky to have her,” Tucker said. “Wood sprites aren’t usually too keen on spending time away from their trees.”

“She lives outside Selena’s house. The two of them had been friends for years before Tulip started working for us. She was fascinated by the coven’s activities—the hunters in particular—and I think her curiosity got the best of her eventually.”

“They have a couple of leprechauns working for the team at headquarters, but they charge an arm and a leg,” he said, shaking his head. “I could have used one of them out in Santa Fe, but they’re way out of my price range.”

“Tulip won’t accept payment,” I said with a shrug.

The fairy returned only a few minutes later. “There are five people in the basement,” she said with her squeaky voice, barely audible. “Three werewolves, a witch, and a vampire. One of the wolves is much larger than the other two. And the witch smells like a wolf, too… I couldn’t see him very well, but his magic is strong.”

“The gang’s all here,” Tucker said with a nod. “The large wolf must be Cyrus.”

“And their teleporter, and the werewolf witch,” I said. “Any wards in place?” I asked Tulip.

“None that I could feel. I don’t think they come here often—it’s a mess inside.”

“Can you lead us to them?” Tucker asked her.

“Once we get inside,” she said. “I teleported into the building, though, so you’ll have to find another way in.” Tulip couldn’t take anyone else with her when she did that.

“So what’s our plan?” I asked.

“We’ll have to take out their witch first,” he said.
